Global Point of View

Keep Your Promises
Buried somewhere in all our collective childhood memories is that sharp stab of disappointment when a parent or other trusted person broke a promise to us. When "We'll go to the zoo tomorrow" never happens, it hurts.

Now we are all grown up and living in the adult world, working in the business world - and broken promises still hurt.

When a co-worker promises to help us on a big project and then fails to deliver, the project suffers. But beyond that, our trust in that person is damaged.

Since we all know the pain and damage a broken promise can cause, let's remember to take any promise we make with all seriousness. Remember that someone is watching us and counting on us to live up to our word.

It is much easier to maintain a good reputation than to try to repair a damaged one.

Inbox

Holiday Email Review
Whew! By mid-December all I wanted for Christmas was some breathing room in my email inbox. Each day the offers came tumbling in: Save 40%. Save 50% plus Free Shipping. Save 60% and Upgrade to Rush Delivery.

As a consumer I was overwhelmed with the rush of offers, often getting multiple emails from the same company each week. But I also took advantage of many of the offers and saved a great deal of money on my Christmas shopping.

As a marketer I was fascinated by the ways that major retailers were using and in some cases abusing the power of email marketing. The email inbox has different rules for success than print, online or broadcast advertising. More is not always better.

Retailers faced with a deteriorating holiday shopping season were looking to email marketing because it offers the ability for rapid and targeted delivery, results that can be measured, and comparably lower costs.

Some used the medium well, others did nothing more than beat a quick path to the deleted items folder.

Socializing

Facebook Group or Page
Okay. You've joined Facebook and now you want capitalize on the social networking aspect. Two of the most common ways to do that is with a Group or a Page. But which one is right for you?

That depends on what you want to promote. A Group is best suited for a casual association. For example, if you are an avid drinker of Diet Coke, you might want to start a group and invite your friends to join.

>> Example of a Diet Coke Group. But if you represent the actual Diet Coke brand, then you will be better served with a Page. >> Diet Coke Facebook Page

Groups can have members and the group administrator is shown. In other words, those on Facebook will be able to see your personal profile.

Pages can have Fans and the administrator is hidden. This is a better fit for a business or event that wants to put the focus on the brand and not on the actual individual who is doing the social networking.

While there is no cost to join Facebook and create a Page or Group to promote your interests, doing it right requires a fair amount of time and planning. This is where Global Marketing Solutions can help. Give us a call to learn more about Facebook and other social networking options.

Cowboys and Podcasts
The 25th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is January 24 through 31 in Elko, Nevada. And if your first thought is dusty trails and campfires, then add to that podcasts and videos on YouTube. These are cowboys who have lassoed the power of marketing their traditional arts with new technology. Our 10-gallon hats are off to them!

Of Interest
Banish the "Staycation"
In 1976 Lake Superior State University in Michigan began the tradition of the annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness. And thankfully this year's list includes the overused term - Staycation.

So we bid you farewell along with "Maverick" and "Not So Much."

And to help us keep up the battle for real travel experiences instead of the backyard-swimming-pool-pretend-to-enjoy vacation, the U.S. Travel Association (formerly TIA) offers these

travel benefits.

Parting Thought
To believe all men honest would be folly. To believe none so, is something worse.
