We often get asked about press releases and often the first question is "How can I make sure that my press release gets used? The tough answer is that you can't. If you want to control what gets printed in the local paper about your business, you can - it is called an ad and you buy it.

A press release is your way of trying to show an editor or reporter the newsworthiness of a particular person, event, service or product. The newsroom staff isn't interested in helping you make money or driving visitors to your website. They are looking for a story that will be interesting to their readers. They have absolutely no obligation to use your press release.

The difficult task is to take your ego out of it. Don't think about why it matters to you. Instead look at your story with a cool, objective eye.

If you would like to learn more about press releases, get in touch with us. April and Laura have both worked as editors and they know what makes a good press release and what winds up in the trash can.

Last month many areas of the South were battered by powerful tornadoes and damaging straight-line winds. And almost before the dust settled, the Salvation Army was on the scene in many of the hardest hit communities. They were there to hand out food, clothing and comfort.

We all think about the Salvation Army during Christmas when we see those red kettles and hear that familiar bell ringer. But the need for help is year-round. It is around the world and around the corner.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the storms. We will continue our support of the

Salvation Army and we encourage you all to do the same.

No, that's not the latest teenage insult. Keeping track of a particular topic on the Internet is nearly impossible. There are so many outlets with media websites, blogs, job postings and on and on. With

Google Alerts you can get daily emails that let you know when something new has been posted about your topic. You can set as many alert topics as you like. So give it a shot with your own business or the competition.

I am in Control Here!

Do you feel that sometimes the world just runs over you, that you just aren't in control? Well, on March 30th it is time for you to take charge of the situation with I am in Control Day.

The day is in honor of the Secretary of State Alexander Haig who uttered the famous words "I am in control here" on March 30, 1981 following the assassination attempt on President Reagan.
