The Art of Communication

You are doing lots of things right to share your marketing message. You are utilizing print, broadcast and online for your ads. You are sending emails to targeted groups. All of these elements are important. But where is the conversation in your campaign?

In a world flooded with information, consumers are telling us that they want a dialogue.

Your billboard has value, but consumers can't pull over to the side of the highway and have a conversation with the billboard. Well, they can, but that's likely a demographic that you aren't trying to reach.

The state of Alabama is enlisting three million people to work for tourism! How's that possible?

The new license plate unveiled by Governor Riley will showcase the state's tourism message - Sweet Home Alabama. As Alabama drivers go about their journeys in-state and across the nation, they will be sharing the message. Pretty Cool!

Check out the license plate design here.

So how can we reach out to consumers and make it easy for them to talk to us?

You are likely already doing some of the important ways. You have a customer service/visitor information phone line where a friendly, knowledgeable person is available to answer questions about accommodations, the weather, where to eat, etc.And maybe you have a chat feature on your website where people can type in a question and interact with a live person.

Parting Thought
Real communication is impossible without listening.

- Ralph C. Smedley

These elements are crucial. But you also need to take the conversation feature to your social networks and set up multiple locations for interaction. Utilize blogs and post to them often. Solicit feedback on your product.

With so many social sites out there and the reality of a limited budget and limited staff resources, this can be a daunting task. Don't let the potential overwhelm you. Select a couple of sites like FaceBook and Flickr and learn how they work.

Start small. Be consistent.
